Leaking Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is a vital part of your braking system. It generates hydraulic pressure that forces your car to a stop. When you step on the brakes, high-pressurized braked fluid is forced into the brake hoses. The pressure from the brake fluid forces the calipers positioned above the wheel rotors to close on the rotors. The calipers produce friction that slows and stops your rotors.

A brake fluid leak will reduce the pressure in the braking system. A lack of pressure in the system reduces your brake’s efficiency, which increases your braking distance. A leak can be very difficult to spot, as the liquid is thin and slightly yellowish. A leak in the system will trigger the brake warning light. Screeching Brakes

As we saw above, the brake calipers are forced against the wheel rotors. The calipers contain brake pads that have a friction material covering. This covering generates friction against the rotors. When the friction material covering has worn down to 1/4″ thickness, a metal spike in the pad becomes visible. Soft Brake Pedal

You can feel the pressure in the braking system when you step on the pedal. You’ll feel resistance, and this resistance increases as you press harder on the pedal.
