1. Boating at Glen Island Park
One fun way to enjoy the great outdoors is to boat at Glen Island Park at Weyman Ave. This 105-acre park features a boat ramp that allows residents of Westchester County access to Long Island Sound. You can launch into the sound from April 1 through October 31 from 8 AM to dusk. You may not launch if your boat is over 21 feet long, though.
2. Hiking at Pelham Bay Park
We also recommend hiking at Pelham Bay Park on Middletown Road & Stadium Avenue. There are many footpaths in this park and three clearly marked trails, the Kazimiroff Nature Trail, the Siwanoy Trail, and the Split Rock Trail. The Kazimoff Nature Trail winds through 189 acres of one of the park’s most beautiful islands, Hunter Island.
The Split Rock Trail is ideal for people looking to take an easy stroll. It is short, and most of it is paved. The highlight of this trail is Split Rock, a massive rock that would be monolithic were it not for a crevice separating the two halves of the boulder. We recommend bringing a friend and having them take a picture of you standing in the crevice.
3. Exploring the New York Botanical Garden
You don’t have to lace up your hiking boots to get some exercise and enjoy the great outdoors. You can also stroll through the 250-acre New York Botanical Garden at 2900 Southern Boulevard. There is a wide range of collections you can enjoy depending on the time of year you are visiting. For instance, the maple collection, lilac collection, and magnolias are worth checking out in the fall.
In the winter, we highly recommend checking out the ornamental conifers, seasonal walk, and snowdrops. If you have kids, you should take them to the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden. They can climb boulders, try to escape a maze, and marvel at the wonders of nature.
