Five Signs Your Honda’s Air Conditioning Needs Maintenance

1. Weak Airflow

If there seems to be weak airflow coming from one or more of the vents, your air conditioning (AC) may need maintenance. Issues with the airflow could be due to blocked or dirty cabin air filters, or you may have a problem with the blower motors or ventilation fan. If there is no airflow at all, there may be an electrical fault, such as a blown fuse.

2. Musty Odor

It’s not uncommon for there to be a temporary dusty smell when you first switch on your AC unit, particularly if it’s the first time you’ve used it in a while. However, if the odor persists or if it smells more like mold or mildew, your AC system may need to be professionally cleaned. Water collects and drains through the Honda AC system, but if this process doesn’t work properly, it can leave a damp environment that is perfect for the growth of mold or mildew.  

3. Strange Noises

The AC should be whisper-quiet while running, providing cool air without any noises other than a subtle whir. If you notice your AC is making strange sounds, you should switch it off and head to your dealership. A rattle could indicate a leaf or stone has gotten stuck in the system, but it may indicate a more serious issue, such as a compressor failure. Other noises such as clicks, knocking, or squealing should also be investigated.

4. Moisture in the Cabin

When your AC is being used, the evaporator core generates a lot of condensation that needs to flow through a hose to drain outside your vehicle. This creates a very light drip under your car. If the hose becomes blocked by dirt, debris, or mold, it can stop the moisture from escaping through its intended route. Instead, the condensation may escape under the dashboard, resulting in a damp cabin and increasing the risk of mold and mildew growth.

5. Significant Dip in Fuel Economy

Using your AC can slightly increase your fuel consumption, especially if the weather is very hot. This is because the engine has to work harder to operate the AC system. If your AC system needs maintenance, the strain on your engine will increase further, leading to significantly higher fuel consumption.
