Leaking Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is a vital part of your braking system. It generates hydraulic pressure that forces your car to a stop. When you step on the brakes, high-pressurized braked fluid is forced into the brake hoses. The pressure from the brake fluid forces the calipers positioned above the wheel rotors to close on the rotors. The calipers produce friction that slows and stops your rotors.

A brake fluid leak will reduce the pressure in the braking system. A lack of pressure in the system reduces your brake’s efficiency, which increases your braking distance. A leak can be very difficult to spot, as the liquid is thin and slightly yellowish. A leak in the system will trigger the brake warning light. We can test the system for leaks and repair any damage we find.

Screeching Brakes

As we saw above, the brake calipers are forced against the wheel rotors. The calipers contain brake pads that have a friction material covering. This covering generates friction against the rotors. The material covering abrades slightly each time you use your brakes. Eventually, the material covering will wear down, and the pads need replacement.

When the friction material covering has worn down to 1/4″ thickness, a metal spike in the pad becomes visible. This spike will scratch against the rotor the next time you brake, and it generates a screeching sound. If you hear a screeching each time you brake, it’s time to visit us for replacement pads. We can quickly remove the worn pads and replace them for you.

Soft Brake Pedal

You can feel the pressure in the braking system when you step on the pedal. You’ll feel resistance, and this resistance increases as you press harder on the pedal. If you step on the brakes and feel little resistance, this is a sign of a problem in the braking system. The lack of pressure could be caused by a brake fluid leak, or it could be caused by an air bubble in the system.

An air bubble will block the flow of brake fluid, which can prevent the brakes from engaging. We’ll examine your brakes and repair the case of the problem.
