How to Change the Honda Key Fob Battery

Need to replace the battery in your Honda key fob? It’s really very easy and will take only a few minutes. Just follow the steps below, and if you find that you need help replacing your Honda key battery, please feel free to stop by Honda of New Rochelle for assistance.

Replacing Your Honda Key Battery

  1. Most Honda key fobs have a small screw that you can remove with a jeweler’s screwdriver. Once you have removed the screw, use a flathead screwdriver to gently separate the two halves of the key fob. Be careful to hold the fob together, so that the contents and external buttons don’t fall loose.
  2. Remove the dead battery, taking note of the positive and negative sides, so that you’ll install the new battery correctly. Also, make sure not to touch the battery terminals, as the oils on your skin can cause corrosion which can shorten the life of the battery.
  3. Insert the new battery in the same position as the old one. Use the positive (+) and negative (-) marks inside the key fob as a guide.
  4. Align the two halves of the key fob and gently apply pressure until you hear it snap together. Then replace the screw.

Choosing the Right Honda Key Fob Battery

You should be able to find the battery type listed on the back of the key fob. If it is illegible, don’t worry—once you’ve opened the key fob, the battery itself will be labeled with the size and voltage. Most key fobs use a flat circular 3-volt battery, which can be found almost anywhere in the Yonkers and White Plains area. However, we recommend that you stop by our parts department when you need a new Honda key fob battery. We’ll make sure that you get the right battery for your Honda key.

What Should I Do If the Key Fob Falls Apart?

Don’t panic! You can use your spare key as a guide to reassemble it.

  1. Place the buttons into the correct slots.
  2. Insert the crossbar between the empty spaces of the top two buttons, with the crossbar’s curvature facing outwards.
  3. Insert the battery back into the motherboard with the positive sign facing out.
  4. Put the motherboard back into the key fob with the rubber film up against the buttons.
  5. Line the back of the key fob up with the front and press it back together until you hear it snap back into place.
  6. Stand next to your vehicle and press all the buttons to make sure that they are working properly.
